A Dedication to Nasi Kandar

Very recently, there is a Facebook group made specifically for Nasi Kandar Lovers. Nasi kandar is influenced by South Indian cooking, brought into Malaysia from the early 20th century. No two Nasi Kandar taste the same, Not even from the same franchise.

The recipe is said to be very well kept family secrets.

I you like Nasi Kandar, feel free to join the group. As at today, three weeks from its initial establishment, there is already 30 thousand members.

A Good Laksa Johor right in TTDI

Have you ever tried a good Laksa Johor, in KL? or the Klang Valley for that matter? No? Yes? Well before the discovery of Kitchen Flavours TTDI by my wife, I have tasted a few so so, OK lah type of Laksa Johor. The best one of course, I had in Johor Baharu itself at a small family run business somewhere on the way to Tualang.

This, is a good Laksa Johor. The difference with Laksa Utara or Penang Laksa or Kedah Laksa, is that this laksa, has no belachan. And, it uses wheat based noodles instead of rice.

Anyway, give it a try when you visit TTDI.

Nasi Impit

Nasi Impit is a simpler version of ketupat Nasi. For what it takes to make ketupat Nasi, weaving coconut leaves and turning it into a pouch, before filling it with rice and then boiling the ketupat for about 3 hours. It takes half the time with Nasi impit. You simply buy the ready made Nasi impit in plastic bags and boil the whole thing for about an hour or so.

Nasi impit is traditional food. I was told that travelers bring Nasi impit during their travel and eat it with serunding (a kind of beef or chicken curry floss). Nasi impit lasts longer than packed rice.

Nowadays, nasi impit and ketupat nasi is eaten with peanut sauce.

Takoyaki

This is Takoyaki, a Japanese snack made from flour batter and cooked with minced octopus or cuttlefish in the middle. Usually eaten during tea time. They tastes nice, with a unique taste on their own. Before 2014, I have never heard of Takoyaki, now it looks like its a common treat around KL.

Eggs Benedict with Salmon

So, I was in Australia, and halal food is available but very limited. I had to walk about 20 minutes to get to the nearest halal restaurant, which means it either its Middle east cooking or overcharged Malay cooking (imagine AUS10 for 4 sticks of satay, thats RM36 or RM9 for a stick of satay.)

Worse still that these restaurants open at 11 am or 12 pm. and I was in Freemantle at 9.30 am.

So the nearest cafe open at 9.00 am was Freemantle Bakehouse. After making sure there was no pork in the dish, I ordered Eggs Benedict with Salmon.

It was delicious, and the smoked Salmon was fresh (freshly smoked, I guess).
